Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard of North Carolina says Clogged Dryer Vents and Christmas Tree Lights can be a Fire Hazard

Dryer vent cleaning is well worth the expense for preventing dryer fires, reducing energy bills, extending the life of your clothes dryer, preventing mold and mildew damage and if you have a gas dryer, it eliminates a possible carbon monoxide threat. All of these great benefits for one small service fee.

The Wizard of North Carolina cannot say enough about the importance of annual dryer vent cleaning. The fall and winter months are the time of year when most home fires occur. It is especially sad when a family is left homeless during the holiday season.

For this reason, the Wizard is also providing tips to prevent fires caused by Christmas tree lights. It was a sad time for a family in Miami who was recently burned out of their home when they went out to pick up a pizza and left the tree lights on. When they returned home just 20 minutes later they found the house to be completely destroyed.

Here are some fire safety tips from the Wizard of North Carolina:

Choose lights that are safety tested by a reputable laboratory, for example UL (Underwriters Laboratories) or ETL (Electrical Testing Laboratories). This information will be noted on the packaging the lights come in if they are deemed safe by these laboratories.

Use the mini lights; the older style, larger bulbs burn much hotter. Choose lights that have fuses in the plugs.

Check your lights before hanging them each year; look for broken sockets, loose connections and frayed or bare wire.

Check the wattage when replacing burned out bulbs.

For outdoor decorating, check the package to be sure the lights can be used outdoors. Plug outdoor decorations into a GFCI outlet and secure lights with insulated holders, not tacks or nails.

Dryer Vents and Christmas Lights – Who would think they had so much in common!

Overheating and Fire Hazard: When dryer vent systems are clogged with lint, they can overheat and cause a fire. When Christmas lights get old and cords become frayed they can overheat and cause a fire.

Never leave home or go to sleep when the dryer is running and the Christmas lights are on.

Have professional dryer vent cleaning done annually and be sure to follow safety precautions when decorating your home for Christmas.

Dryer Vent Cleaning Repairs Dryer Problems says the Wake County Wizard

Your appliances require proper maintenance for them to work safely and efficiently. Unfortunately, few people think of their clothes dryer as a potential threat. Do you know your clothes dryer is one of the most likely appliances to cause a fire?

One of my neighbors just purchased a new dryer because the old one wasn’t working as well as it used to. When he installed it, he noticed that it ran very hot. He asked me to check it out because I specialize in dryer vent cleaning and all dryer exhaust issues.

The first thing I noticed was the old vinyl dryer vent hose leading from the back of the dryer to the vent outside. The excess tubing was coiled behind the dryer while the rest of it extended about 10 feet to the dryer vent outside. When I disconnected it from the dryer, I found that it was clogged with lint. I was amazed that he would attach this old thing to his new dryer. I explained to him that this dryer vent was not able to expel the hot air from the dryer to the outdoors; this was the cause of the overheating.

Vinyl and flexible foil venting is not in compliance with today’s safety codes. Dryer ducts should be aluminum or semi-rigid metal that is smooth inside. They should be as short as possible and as straight as possible to allow optimum air-flow.

I’m sure he is kicking himself for wasting money on a new clothes dryer when all he really needed to do was upgrade his dryer vent exhaust system. The dryer ducts and dryer vent are responsible for removing lint, heat and moisture from the dryer drum to the outdoors. If you have a gas dryer the system also removes gas by-products from your home. A poorly vented gas dryer can cause carbon monoxide to leak into your home.

When the dryer ducts and dryer vent are clogged with lint then heat cannot escape the dryer drum; the system overheats and the lint catches on fire. Lint is very combustible; therefore, fuel for a rapidly spreading fire.

Clean Dryer Vents to Reduce Energy Bills and Prevent Dryer Fires says the Wizard of Wake County, NC

Attention Residents with Clothes Dryers in Wake County, North Carolina

Your clothes dryer is among the top 5 energy consumers in your home. Here are some tips for saving energy when drying laundry. Whether your dryer is gas or electric, both operate the same, drying your laundry by heating and tumbling. Both require proper air flow to avoid over-working and to accomplish this task efficiently.

Dryer Vent Cleaning tips for Wake County, North Carolina Consumers

Proper dryer vent cleaning and maintenance ensures proper air-flow, which is most vital to avoid overworking the clothes dryer and to prevent a potential fire hazard. When the dryer vent system is clogged with lint, it will obstruct air-flow, cause severe overheating, and eventually, a fire. Dryer vent cleaning, by a dryer vent specialist, is recommended at least once a year; more often if you have a large family.

Maintain the Lint Filter, says Dryer Vent Wizard of Wake County, NC

Most everyone knows to clean the lint filter after every load; however, few are aware that the lint screen should be washed in warm, soapy water periodically. The use of fabric softener sheets, like Bounce, can cause a film to build up on the lint screen. This will restrict air flow needed for your dryer to work efficiently.

Do Full Loads – Don’t Over-load, as advised by Wake County Dryer Vent Cleaning Company

Try to only do full loads of laundry; small loads waste a lot of energy that could be used for washing and drying a full load. Be careful not to over load as this will cause the washer and dryer to overwork; additional wear and tear leads to the expense of repairing and/or replacing your appliances.

Separate Light and Heavy Weights

Heavier items, such as jeans and towels naturally take longer to dry than lighter weight items like T-shirts. It has been suggested to dry the different weights separately, but you can also start them together, and stop the dryer to remove the lighter items that are dry, and then take advantage of the already heated drum to dry the rest. This way, you aren’t allowing a cool down between loads; you save the energy that would otherwise be used to heat the drum again.

About Dryer Sensors and Energy Saving Features on Newer Clothes Dryers

Clothes dryers have become more energy efficient as most new models have dryness sensors so that the dryer automatically moves on to the cool-down cycle or turns off when laundry is dry. The sensors prevent over-drying of clothes which prolongs the life of your clothing while saving energy.

Solar Drying is Free in Wake County, North Carolina

When the weather is right, hang laundry outdoors and let Mother Nature’s sun and breeze dry your laundry free. This can be inconvenient for some, but even if you just hang a small amount, like sheets and towels, you will be saving energy.

Clothing Rods are Popular Money Savers in Wake County, North Carolina

Clothing rods are good for use indoors or outdoors. The clothing rod is a great money saver. You can dry your laundry for a short time, to remove wrinkles, remove your laundry when it is still damp and hang to finish drying.

Your clothes dryer is one of the top energy consumers in your home. Reducing the energy cost of doing laundry will help save money on utility bills. Proper appliance maintenance is also a major money saver, saving on utility bills, and appliance repair bills. A well maintained appliance will work more efficiently and have less risk of failure.
